In 1858 the Blessed Mother appeared in Lourdes, France to a 14-year old girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous. She declared to her when asked her identity that she was “the Immaculate Conception”. Four years earlier the Pope declared an infallible dogma that the Blessed Mother was concieved without sin. That is why She is the Queen of the Immaculate Heart. She lived on earth as a person in union with God so that She never sinned. This dogma and apparition were timely because one year later in 1859 Charles Darwin published the Origin of Species. Since then people doubted that two people, Adam and Eve, ever really existed and much less that they commited original sin and cursed mankind. By the declaration that the Blessed Mother was born without original sin the teaching of mankind’s fall was reinforced. This first apparition of the Blessed Mother’s begins her apocalyptic battle.
Many miracles were performed there. The Lourdes Medical Bureau was formed to handle all the claims of miraculous cures that came from drinking the spring water at the place of the apparition. Over 700 miracles were claimed and 68 were declared inexplicably miraculous. Two were observed by a Nobel Prize winning scientist Alexis Carrel. He watched an 18-month old boy born blind recieve his vision. He also saw a young woman terminally diagnosed with tuberculosis who had a swollen abdomen. She lowered herself into the blessed water and after she emerged her swollen abdomen gradually swelled until it was flat in only a matter of minutes. She was cured.
The chaplain of the Lourdes grotto (The Catholic priest who ministers there) was cured of blindness by the water. He tells the story of it in a documentary called Lourdes: Pilgrimage and Healing.
